The Faculty of Sports Science consists of six departments: The Department of Sports Science, The Department of Health & Welfare Science, The Department of Sports & Exercise Nutrition, The Department of Sports Intelligence & Mass Media, The Department of Modern Martial Arts, and Department of Exercise Education for Children.

Department of Sports Science

The Department of Sports Science aims to develop professionals in the various sports sciences, including physical education instructors, fitness instructors, athletic trainers, sports programmers and junior instructors. It offers three courses: the Sports Coaching Course, Sports Trainer Course and Sports Management course.
The Sports Coaching Course covers both competition sports and lifetime sports. In the competition sports area, students learn newly developed sports training and coaching methods as well as sports information strategy necessary for the relevant competitions.
The lifetime sports area teaches professional knowledge and skills for training junior athletes and leading sports activities of senior people.
The Sports Trainer Course prepares both fitness trainers and athletic trainers. This course teaches professional knowledge and skills necessary for athletic trainers and strength & conditioning experts.
The Sports Management Course develops coordinators and managers of sports events and facilities. The course also provides fundamental and practical knowhow, skills and management competence of outdoor education and outdoor recreation activities.

Department of Health & Welfare Science

The Department of Health & Welfare Science teaches both health care and social welfare in a comprehensive way with the aim of developing experts in health care, social welfare, care work and sports instruction for the disabled. For this purpose, students are taught not only fundamental knowledge of medicine, but also practical knowhow and techniques of both health care and social welfare, as well as nursing methods for the elderly and the disabled.

Department of Sports & Exercise Nutrition

The Department of Sports & Exercise Nutrition strives to develop experts in the interaction between nutrition and exercise which are the main two components of well-being. Students gain professional knowledge and skills for combining sports activities and improving exercise nutrition for athletes. In addition, students learn nutrition programs for ordinary people who wish to improve their health.

Department of Sports Intelligence & Mass Media

In the Department of Sports Intelligence & Mass Media we aim to nurture specialists in the effective use of sports information who know well how to analyze, process and transmit it, including recreation coordinators, athletic club managers, and professionals who work in all areas of sports media.
Students learn two distinctive study models, i.e., the Sports Information Strategy Model and the Sports Mass Media Model. The Sports Information Strategy Model gives detailed lessons on an analytical and effective use of sports information necessary for sports competitions and ways of formulating the relevant information into sports strategy. The Sports Mass Media Model offers studies of efficient ways of conveying sports information through mass media.

Department of Modern Martial Arts

The Department of Modern Martial Arts strives to develop the mastery over mind and body through traditional martial arts, including Kendo, Judo, Aikido, Karatedo, Taekwondo and Taikyoku-ken, to train martial arts instructors, and security specialists for many security related fields.
The Martial Arts Instructors Course teaches the history of martial arts, and the cultural and moral value of martial arts, as well as coaching methods of martial arts. The Security Specialists Course provides training for self-defense and the mastery of martial arts skills. The course also teaches risk analysis and crisis management, dealing with national security, police enforcement, fire prevention and private security guards.

Department of Exercise Education for Children

Department of Exercise Education for Children, the newest sixth department at Sendai University was newly born in April 2017, the year of our university’s 50th Anniversary.  The Department is a child caring training school with a completely new perspective not found in the past. The Department provides students with unique opportunity of developing a better understanding and deeper knowledge of not only child nurturing but also exercise education to assist and enhance children’s physical activities. The Department offers the comprehensive curriculum for students in developing and educating the talents of today that are eager to learn about the developmental growth stages of children, thereby, students get a chance in contributing to society in the future as a great child caring specialist like a childcare worker of a day nursery and a teacher of a kindergarten.
To those who love sports! Children! With curiosity, drive, desire and affection for child caring and child exercise education, the Department is a good place for their challenges.
