Dean’s Message
Cultivating the Power to Transform Society through Sport Sciences
-- Practical Science: Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice --
Since its establishment in 1998, the Graduate School Division of Sports Science (Master’s Program) at Sendai University has built a distinguished history of more than a quarter century and is now entering a new phase of development. Over this period, our graduate school has cultivated professionals with advanced specialized expertise and produced specialists who have made significant contributions across a wide range of fields in society.
Modern Japanese society is facing complex and multifaceted challenges, including population decline, a low birthrate and aging population, regional revitalization, and the pursuit of well-being amid changing work styles. At the same time, rapid advancement of digital technologies — particularly generative AI — is transforming the very structure of society (Society 5.0) and dramatically improving access to information. In the field of physical education, sport, and health sciences as well, the vast body of knowledge — specifically objective information and empirical data — accumulated over the past 75 years has become more accessible than ever before. In this sense, the information revolution can be understood as a process that unlocks the knowledge and insights accumulated by previous generations and transforms them into practical resources that can be effectively applied to address the complex challenges of the modern society. If that is the case, the question now facing us is how to implement this accumulated knowledge in society and connect it to problem-solving through the creation of new value.
In response to the demands of this era, our graduate school will further reinforce its educational philosophy of “Practical Science” (Jitsugaku), which emphasizes the high-level integration of academic theory and field-based practice. Our mission extends beyond the mere accumulation and transmission of existing knowledge. Rather, we aim to cultivate the capacity to interpret such knowledge within real-world contexts and to transform it into “practical wisdom” (sophia) that can be effectively applied in professional settings. Central to this mission is the development of advanced expertise capable of driving this transformation. We are committed to further integrating and elevating logical reasoning and practical competencies to a higher dimension. In doing so, we aim to lead the advancement of sport sciences and nurture preeminent professionals capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
I sincerely hope that your academic journey at our graduate school will broaden your intellectual horizons and provide a solid foundation for developing the capacity to create new value for society.
